Octoberfest - ALATetc Events Newsletter

Dear Theater Lovers,

Fall has arrived and with it friends from across the pond.   Despite a sluggish economy we at ALATetc are forging ahead but we need your help to realize our ambitions.

Please join us this month in inaugurating the Institute for Crimes against Culture, an organization devoted to cross cultural awareness and to producing international encounters for theater groups.  ICAC is the brain child of our literary director, Dr. Seth Baumrin and is being launched by the US premiere of Slovenia's GLEJ Theatre's SKRIP Orkestra (SCREECH Orchestra) hosted by ALATetc and in concert with the Art and Justice Series at John Jay College's Gerald W. Lynch Theatre.
SKRIP Orkestra is a collective of women who were children during the wars in former Yugoslavia who went on to become successful advocates for justice and social services for the youth.  In their performance, stories of lost childhoods and survival in the aftermath of the wars of the 1990s, in which neighbor was pitted against neighbor during a period of ethnic cleansing, are told through powerful songs and visual imagery-relevant while playful.

Also this month Actor, Director, and Master Voice Teacher Jean-René Toussaint of Stemwerk in the Netherlands, returns to New York City, offering the Primitive Voice Workshop, private sessions and a rare opportunity to audition and work with him.  Jean-René's unique voice work is the result of twenty five years of research and development and is informed by his work with deaf adults and children.  You do not need to be a performer to benefit from this work.

As you can see we are up to big things but we need your help to achieve our goals.  We need you to attend, we need you to volunteer, we need you to help us spread the word, and we are also in need of your financial help.  Your gift of $5 or more is fully tax deductable through our fiscal sponsor The Field.

Won't you please support our great adventure?

Torgeir Wethal (1947 - 2010)

Dear Friends,

The funeral for Torgeir Wethal was recently held in Denmark.  Eugenio reported that "We bade farewell to him, surrounded by 200 friends who had come from all over Europe, and they sang, quoted poems, played music and delivered speeches."

We who were too far away to be a part of that sendoff will come together for a memorial service to mark the passing of and to pay respect to the life of our dear friend and colleague.  It will be held:
Monday, August 2nd
7pm-9pm
at La MaMa Experimental Theatre
74A East 4th St.http://odinteatret.dk.web110.curanetserver.dk/
New York, NY 10003

In the interest of time and space please RSVP to me at this email address vernicem@hotmail.com and let me know if you would like to participate with song, poem, speech etc.

Jean-Rene Toussaint Voice Workshop - APRIL/MAY 2010

If you haven't already done so here is a last minute reminder about the Jean-Rene Toussaint voice workshop.

I've included lots of information below but in a nut shell Jean-Rene's work is not centered on making pretty voices nor is it a workshop just for singers.  It is instead a deeply personal work on accessing more of yourself, in a very short amount of time, through vocal work.   I recommended this for teachers and performers alike.

Also, even if you don't have the time or the money to participate in the workshop this time around, do come to the lecture demo on Thursday to meet Jean-Rene and learn first hand about his work.

Lecture-Demo:  "The Moveable Voice, The Moveable Self"
Thursday April 29th, 7pm-9pm
Tix now $10 at the door (free for workshop participants)
SITI Company, 520 8th Avenue, Suite 310, between 36th and 37th

Workshop:  THE PRIMITIVE VOICE
Friday April 30th - Saturday May 1st, 10am-5pm
SITI Company, 520 8th Avenue, Suite 310, between 36th and 37th

Workshop:  VOICE AS A TOOL FOR ACTING
Sunday May 2nd - Tuesday May 4th, 10am-5pm
SITI Company, 520 8th Avenue, Suite 310, between 36th and 37th

* PLEASE arrive 10-15 minutes early for the first workshop day (Friday April 30th) to check in with me about payments, receipts, private sessions etc.  We will break for lunch in the afternoon.  There are plenty of eateries nearby, though you may want to pack something to save time.

* Wear comfortable clothes, be prepared to move & to work without shoes/socks.  I recommend bringing some bottled water, a journal/writing utensil, and a towel/light blanket/yoga mat (often Jean-René works with exercises involving lying on the floor, sometimes face down).

PRIVATE SESSIONS
Wed May 5th-Thursday May 6th
90 minutes to two hours (Ask me about the schedule)
Discounted rates for workshop participants: Individual Session $125 / Couple's Session $165
Simple Studios, 134 West 29th Street, 2nd Floor between 6th and 7th
If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact Audrey (email only before April 28th).

ACTION for HAITI: Monday Jan 18th, 2010, Cafe Petisco, NYC

CALL TO ACTION
RELIEF CAMPAIGN FOR HAITI
Monday
January 18th, 2010

6pm-9pm
  Cafe Petisco
189 East Broadway and Jefferson
(212) 389-0366
New York City

Our Dear Friends,

Please come together in support of Haiti at Cafe Petisco, 189 East Broadway on Monday January 18th 6-9pm.

The assessments are just beginning; already we know that the 7.0 earthquake that hit Haiti's capital of Port-au-Prince Tuesday is a catastrophe of major proportions.

While it's heartening to see the swift response from our President and the international community overall, we should not take the relief effort for granted nor leave it up to others to fix it.

The earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12 is simply the latest in a long line of devastations that has been visited on the Haitian people.  Many survivors require immediate assistance with shelter, food, water, and medical attention. To this end we are committing our efforts to an ongoing campaign to raise funds for the Haitian crisis.

© Stefano Zannini /MSF

The most immediate, pressing need is medical aid, therefore we are coming together this Monday to raise funds for Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières) an international, independent, medical humanitarian organization that provides emergency medical assistance to populations in danger in more than 70 countries.

MSF has been setting up emergency medical aid missions around the world since 1971. On Tuesday MSF staff immediately started treating hundreds of people injured and have been setting up clinics in tents to replace their own damaged medical facilities.

Daily we are seeing the heartbreaking images of the devastation.  Let us not feel helpless; let us act now by coming together to send desperately needed funds to the Haitian people.

Monday's event at Cafe Petisco will be hosted by Godfrey L. Simmons, Jr. and will include cocktails, appetizers, music by DJ Sunshine and a silent auction of donated art works by various New York City artists plus special guest appearances including comedienne Hazelle Goodman.  We ask that you dig deeply into your hearts for a suggested donation of at least $25.00 per person100% of all donations will go to Doctors Without Borders.

RSVP:     (347) 526-8782

We look forward to your support.

Sincerely,
Kobi Skolnick and Vernice P. Miller

HAPPENING TONIGHT!! - Red Tent Fabrik & Nightly Labs

Happy New Year!
Please join us tonight
and
start the New Year with Presence!
TONIGHT!

Sunday, January 3rd 7pm-8:30pm

We are throwing open the doors to our rehearsal/training session. You are specially invited into this very early stage as we work on creating a new performance piece and an ALATetc aesthetic.

Red Tent Fabrik marks the first phase of development for a full production entitled Children of Abraham, ALATetc's dramatic response to Anita Diamant's The Red Tent, which tells the biblical story of the wives and only daughter of Jacob.

We aim to explore the common roots and rituals of the three Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Islam, and Christianity) by weaving together different artistic and musical elements from these traditions. The project will be developed largely through ensemble-based physical and vocal improvisation, guided playwrighting, and will feature dynamic movement, polyphonic vocal music, and nonlinear storytelling.

Monday January 4th
Vernice P. Miller and Seth Baumrin

INITIATION OF A FLOATING ISLAND
In the 1980s, Five Moon Theater founders and artistic directors Seth Baumrin and Vernice P. Miller facilitated three colloquia with Jerzy Grotowski and one colloquium with Eugenio Barba in New York City. For ten years Ms. Miller was the principal actor with Five Moon Theater under Mr. Baumrin's direction. In this nightly lab, the pair is reunited to present Five Moon's history and discuss the director-solo performer relationship.

Tuesday January 5th
Joann Maria Yarrow

CROSSING CULTURES
While training with Roberta Carreri at Odin Teatret, Joann Maria Yarrow met Vernice P. Miller, and the seeds for ALATetc were planted in the winter of 1995 at the Greenwich Street Theatre in New York City. We searched to make the training our own, incorporating the different disciplines, cultures, and performance styles of the artists with whom we collaborated. During this journey a connection was made with Neil David Seibel in California, and ALATetc continued to grow and tour to other countries with a diverse group of theater performers. Now the Director of Prometeo Theatre, a Spanish-language theatre conservatory, Joann will discuss and demonstrate exercises that are part of ALATetc's core training. She will work with actors from different cultural backgrounds and disciplines, and reveal how we use these techniques to create performance material.

INTEGRATING THE ACTOR
Neil David Seibel has lived among a wide variety of performance disciplines: theatre, dance, cabaret and musical theatre, film and television, movement theatre and solo performance. In 1997 he met a girl named Joann and became intimately involved with the fledgling ALATetc, finding a home for his self-described "everything goes approach to the art of storytelling". Moving from the premise that an actor has three resources to train - the mind, the body, and the voice - this evening's lab will reflect ND's current work of connecting the life of the storyteller to the spirit of the character, thus Integrating The Actor.

Thursday January 7th
Ursula Neuerburg-Denzer

EMO LAB
Professor Neuerburg-Denzer studied movement and acting in Köln and Berlin, Germany. In Berlin she co-founded and ran Theater Zerbrochene Fenster for a number of years before moving to New York City in 1990. It was here that she met Vernice P. Miller in a Roberta Carreri workshop. Professor Neuerburg-Denzer is interested in the effects of war and other situations of extreme pressure on the human being, and how these states have been and can be expressed on stage. She is also promoting the study of emotions in theater and brings to us her emotion research from her ongoing Emo Lab at Concordia University in Montreal.

Friday January 8th
Audrey Pernell

VISHUDDHA & THE SOUND BODY
Ms. Pernell studied theatre at Swarthmore College with Ursula Neuerburg-Denzer and Vernice P. Miller. Presently, she is a graduate student designing her own curriculum in voice with contemporary international masters of voice and theatre through Antioch University McGregor. In this vocal performance laboratory, Ms. Pernell will draw on approaches derived from Roy Hart, Jean-Rene Toussaint, and Jerzy Grotowski, and explore these through the lens of the Chakra System and other Yogic teachings. "No matter our genre, as performers we must access the totality of our instruments - body, mind, and presence in our developmental and creative work. The voice is the bridge through which we can connect these seemingly disparate aspects of our beings, and the lens through which we may begin truly to see ourselves and reveal ourselves to an audience". ~AP
